Tao Te Ching 26.6-9
By studying the learning process, we understand that to perform a complicated activity we use a “whole-part-whole” process. We see the “whole” activity that we are trying to accomplish, then break the activity into individual tasks and possibly subtasks. We practice those tasks until facility is attained and finally, we integrate them to perform the “whole” complicated activity that was our initial goal. Sometimes the breakdown of a very complex activity (like becoming a musician/trombonist) into tasks can blur a system of priorities related to the integration of various individual tasks into the performance of the activity.
Although this book can suggest what things to practice, it cannot tell each individual how much time to spend on a certain task. Everyone is different and has different strengths and weaknesses, so truthful evaluation is up to the individual. The only way results can be guaranteed is through diligent, fully concentrated practice. This book shows you how to organize and prioritize your practice time but it’s up to you to actually put that advice into action.
